The Big Impact of Small Businesses

National data shows that small businesses account for most of the U.S. retail industry.

Large chains, such as Walmart, Home Depot and Macy’s, compose only a small percentage of the retail sector. The numbers reveal that nearly 99 percent of all retail businesses employ fewer than 50 people and 95 percent of all retailers are operating from just one location, according to the National Retail Federation. In other words, small businesses are a big deal.

 nothing small about small businesses

Applied to Retail: Use the National Retail Federation data to reinforce to your customers the importance of small businesses to the retail industry.

In addition, take every opportunity to show how valuable your business is to your specific community. Display free shop-local signage provided by the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) and Independent We Stand.

This signage uses data from the organizations’ Home Sweet Home Study to show the economic impact an independent home improvement business has on a community. The free signage toolkit includes posters, shelf talkers, bag stuffers, social media posts and more.
