On the latest episode of Housing Developments, a podcast from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), 2025 NAHB chairman Buddy Hughes shared what he’s hearing from members and his plans for the association throughout 2025.
Hughes was elected to NAHB leadership at the International Builders’ Show in February, which hosted more than 81,000 builders.
“Everybody is so positive about the building industry, NAHB and their state and local association,” Hughes says. “It’s a good time to be involved right now.”
Hughes says 2025 provides an opportunity to tackle key industry issues including addressing building codes and regulatory burdens, as housing affordability remains a priority across the nation.
“We’re being hammered about the cost of housing—and of course, we take the blame,” Hughes says. “We know how we can get the cost of housing down is to reduce this regulatory burden. So that’s at the top of my list.”
Builders are also gearing up to keep the market going as proposed tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods may go into effect on April 2. NAHB is engaged in conversation with the White House and Congress on the issue.
Hughes will also be testifying next week before the House Small Business Committee on the challenges of regulations on small businesses.
