Lumber King President Announces Retirement

Lumber King, which has five locations throughout Kentucky and Tennessee, announced the retirement of its president, John Kayae, who is stepping down after 13 years at the helm. Since taking on his role in 2012, Kayae led Lumber King through a period of significant growth and expansion.

“Lumber King’s accomplishments over the last thirteen years aren’t about me, but reflect the energy and effort put forward by our employees, the owners,” Kayae says. “It’s all about people. The employees not only welcomed the stranger from Texas, but accepted my vision of the future and worked to reshape and reposition our sales. ”

Under his leadership, the company expanded its market area from Lexington, Kentucky, to Knoxville, Tennessee, through the establishment of an outside sales team, which created opportunities for both business and its employee-owners.”

“Our growth has made Lumber King more secure; that is important to any company, but especially an ESOP,” Kayae says. “Lumber King is now better positioned for the future, and that would have been impossible without the dedication of the people I’ve had the honor of working with.”

Kayae’s leadership style, which centered on employee empowerment and collaborative vision, left a lasting impact on both staff and customers throughout his tenure.

Following his retirement, Kayae and his wife Sharon plan to celebrate this new chapter with travel, including cruises and sightseeing adventures. Despite stepping back from day-to-day operations, Kayae intends to maintain his connection to the lumber industry in the years ahead.

“We’ve been blessed to have John as our President,” says Sydney Hupp, Lumber King marketing director. “His dedication, vision and people-first approach have positioned Lumber King for continued success. We wish him nothing but the best in his well-deserved retirement.”
