While battery-powered outdoor power equipment is still not the majority, it is gaining traction, according to data from The Farnsworth Group. Stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, DIY home improvement projects, many of which involve outdoor power equipment, have risen in popularity, growing 12% year-over-year in 2023.
From 2016 to 2020, there has been a steady increase in the percentage of DIYers buying smaller format outdoor power equipment like hedge trimmers, pressure washers and even chainsaws. The Farnsworth Group says this steady increase aligns with younger generations being more apt to take on a project themselves.
The biggest trend The Farnsworth Group saw in its study was the continued migration of DIYers buying battery-powered outdoor power equipment. They say trimmers and push mowers are the two most popular items customers are looking for. Many consumers may still be looking for gas-powered outdoor power equipment, as battery power is still in its infancy and many of the lawnmowers and trimmers have shortened run times and not as much power as traditional gas.
Brands like EGO, Ryobi, Black & Decker and others all sell their versions of an electric lawnmower.
