Customers at Beisswenger’s in New Brighton, Minnesota, have access to an unusual but necessary product for rent—live animal traps. The store rents live traps for a more humane trapping and removal process for mice, voles, chipmunks, rats, squirrels, rabbits, opossums, raccoons and groundhogs.
Mark Armstead, lawn and garden manager, says the price of traps has skyrocketed over the years, and many of the store’s customers just need a trap temporarily or want to try it out before they buy. The trap rentals are another way the store, which has been in business for over 100 years, serves the community.
Each trap rental requires a deposit, which covers the cost of the trap if the customer decides to purchase the trap and keep it. The first day’s rental is $10 and $1 per day after the first day. Most customers come in looking for squirrel traps, especially in the fall months, says Armstead.
“The rentals aren’t a huge moneymaker for us but are a convenience and courtesy for our customers,” he says. “As part of the service, I always walk them through the setup, where to place it for best success and discuss food bait options, which makes us more of a one-stop shop.”
