4 Creative Ways to Merchandise Decking Products

Because of the size and vast number of options available, merchandising decking products can take up a large amount of salesfloor space. Check out these creative ideas to merchandise the space you have available and let customers know what you offer in decking materials.

Offer samples. Along with educating customers on the features of both wood and composite, the staff at Niece Lumber shows customers their options. The store has thousands of smaller pieces of decking they give customers to take home.

Display full decks. The lumberyard at Niece Lumber features around 1,000 square feet of deck displays with railings to give customers a visual of what their completed deck could look like.

“Typically, when we work with customers, we’ll start with some of the small samples inside to get an idea of what they’re leaning toward, and then we’ll walk them outside and show them the product on a larger scale,” owner Marc Currie says.

Include accessories. Cross-merchandising not only gives customers ideas on how to outfit their new decks, it adds to your transaction sizes. Include patio furniture, lights, outdoor planters, rugs and other accessories near or with your decking materials.

Use photos. If you’re short on space and can’t display full decks at your location, share photos of your customer’s finished deck projects on your website, social media channels and in the store.
