Starting Nov. 1, the U.S. will charge new tariffs on heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks and buses, per an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
Imports of medium- and heavy-duty trucks and associated parts will receive a 25% tariff, with buses facing a 10% tariff. These costs will not stack on previously enacted tariffs. These new tariffs apply to a broad list of Class 3 to Class 8 vehicles, including large pickup trucks, dump trucks, cargo trucks and semis, along with parts for engines, transmissions, tires, chassis and other key parts used in assembly.
The executive order states that these types of vehicles are indispensable to American infrastructure and economic stability, moving more than 70% of the nation’s freight.
Along with the order, the administration also gave a path for companies to offset some of the tariffs if products qualify for certain trade agreements. To skirt the tariffs, importers must provide proof of parts made in the U.S., and will not have to pay tariffs on those U.S.-made parts.
