In Memoriam: Former Our Own Hardware CEO Jim Weyrens Sr.

James (Jim) Edward Weyrens Sr., former president and CEO of Our Own Hardware, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 9, 2026.

Jim’s career began with Montgomery Ward and then Target as the sporting goods buyer. He later joined wholesaler Our Own Hardware Inc. as the general merchandise manager and became president and CEO in 1982. Our Own Hardware merged with Hardware Wholesalers Inc. in 1998, which later became Do it Best.

At the time, Our Own Hardware was the oldest member-owned hardware distributor in the country and a very well-run company. Its challenge was geography, as it was largely landlocked across the upper Midwest and Great Plains states. By the time the company looked to expand into more populous Midwestern and East Coast markets, many of the best opportunities had already been claimed. Combined with the ever-increasing cost of technology, it became clear that the company’s long-term path was narrowing.
“When Jim came to Hardware Wholesalers Inc. saying they were ready to join us, he made one thing clear: There would be no premium asked, only that we honor the current value of the members’ stock,” says Randy Rusk, communications director for True Value. “Jim and the board knew they could have pursued other options, but that was not the path they chose. They kept their word and in doing so, Jim and the board helped create a tremendous relationship that all involved can still be proud of today.”

Known for his personable and altruistic nature, Jim always led with integrity. Along with being a devoted family man, he was active in his church, Rotary and the local chamber of commerce and enjoyed golf, volunteering at church and doing pottery in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he spent his retirement years with his wife of 65 years, Peg.

Jim is survived by survived by Peg, as well as his children Jim Weyrens and his wife Robin Weyrens; Nick Weyrens and his wife Sarah Weyrens, James, Cooper and Elsie; Andy Weyrens and his wife Denise Weyrens, Paisley and Brynleigh; Bailee Weyrens. Katie Ossell and her husband Dave Ossell, Ryan Ossell and fiance Natalie; Jake Ossell and his wife Taylor Ossell; Gretchen Tuttle and her husband Tim Tuttle, Megan Gerdes and her husband Luc Gerdes; Erin Shaeffer and her husband Gage Shaeffer, Bradie and Nellie; Paige Tuttle; and his sister Barb Sura and his many nieces and nephews.
