Hardware Retailing The Industry's Source for Insights and Information
Do it Best and Estwing Manufacturing Co. recently recognized the achievements of three individuals with the Estwing Golden Hammer award, a prestigious award recognizing outstanding individuals who have dedicated over 50 years of service to the independent home improvement industry.
The event was held at Brownsboro Hardware & Paint in Prospect, Kentucky.
Ray Moneypenny, former owner of a neighborhood hardware store founded by his grandfather, was recognized for his over 50 years of leadership, work ethic and commitment to the hardware industry and his community at Brownsboro Hardware & Paint. Doug Carroll, owner of the store, presented the award to Ray.
Norb Walthers was honored for serving the industry for over 70 years, starting at Belknap Hardware in Louisville, Kentucky, and later serving the community at Stratton & Terstegge and Do it Best. Walthers retired in 1997, but has continued to serve the industry with Do it Best and representing ELSCO. Former owner of Brownsboro Hardware & Paint, Jim Lehrer, presented the award to Walthers.
Ed Lewis, founder of ELSCO, was also honored for his more than 50 years of service and leadership in the hardware and building supply industry. Lewis founded ELSCO in 1974 and the vendor rep group has played a pivotal role in shaping the industry. Dan Starr, CEO of Do it Best and True Value, presented the award to Lewis.
In addition to the celebration, Prospect City councilman John Clark shared a message from Mayor Douglass Farnsley, who announced August 4, 2025, as “Ray Moneypenny Day” in honor of his service and impact on the hardware industry.
