The Estwing Hammer Award recognizes retailers in the independent home improvement channel who have been a part of the industry for 50 years or more. John Fix III of Cornell’s Hardware in Eastchester, New York, is a third-generation distinguished winner of this award. John’s father and grandfather are both Golden Hammer recipients as well.
John began his journey working in hardware alongside his father and grandfather in 1973. After completing his college career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston University, John returned home to Eastchester to join the family business.

John serves not only his store, but the independent hardware industry as a whole. He is the founder of the “Hardlines Message Board” Google group, an online discussion group for independent hardware retailers, and has a wealth of knowledge from working at Cornell’s for most of his life.
John worked alongside his sister, Mary Beth Fix, an expert in grill and seasonal sales, and Thomas Fix, their cousin. In May 2022, the Fix family sold Cornell’s Hardware to The Aubuchon Company to ensure the store would continue to operate and serve the community of Eastchester for years to come
John and Mary Beth serve at The Aubuchon Company, with John working in the inventory department and Mary Beth in the product management department. Bringing the same passion and dedication he brought to Cornell’s, John continues to embody the values of service, quality and community while honoring the legacy of their family’s beloved business.
