National Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 5-11, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is spreading awareness on for keeping homes and businesses safe from fire. During the week, NFPA will share helpful tips that you can share with your customers and serve as a trusted resource.
The NFPA’s focus this year is on the safe use and disposal of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly found in many small electronics, including power tools. These batteries must be properly recycled and never thrown in the trash on a job site. Rechargeable tools should always be safely stored or removed from the job site each day.
“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and they’re just about everywhere,” says Lorraine Carli, vice president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA. “Making sure the public knows how to use them safely is critical to minimizing the potential risks they pose.”
Lithium-ion batteries are widely used without incident. However, reports of fires and explosions involving lithium-ion batteries have been on the rise in recent years, reinforcing the importance of better educating the public about how to use, handle and recycle them safely.
