Former board president of the North American Hardware and Paint Association (NHPA) Thomas (Tom) Green, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, just two days after celebrating his 86th birthday.
In 1972, Tom purchased Mayer Hardware in Rochester, New York, beginning his four-decade career in the independent home improvement channel. His wife, Barb, left her nursing career to join him as the bookkeeper and worked alongside him for 45 years.
Together, Tom and Barb built a community cornerstone where customers became friends and employees became family. Tom served as the president of the New York State Retail Hardware Association and later became president of the National Retail Hardware Association. He also served on the Benjamin Moore Retail Advisory Board and the Servistar Board of Directors.
Outside of hardware, Tom proudly served his country as a Chief Warrant Officer (W3) in the Army Reserves and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Damascus shrine, roles that reflect his lifelong dedication to service.
Tom is survived by his daughter Traci (Pete) and son Tommy (Sara); his cherished grandchildren Craig (Channi), Ellie (Kevin), Koby, Shea (Kimmie); his four great-grandchildren Rowan, Maverick, Ryan and Westin.
