NRHA Recommends: Read These Books on Leadership

One of the many ways the North American Retail Hardware Association works to fulfill its mission is through training opportunities and supplemental training resources.

In this flagship installment of NRHA Recommends, NRHA staff members Scott Wright, executive director of the Retail Leadership Institute, and CEO Bill Lee offer their recommendations for books that can help develop your leadership skills and those of your team members.

For insights into leadership, Wright turns to “Learning Leadership: The Five Fundamentals of Becoming an Exemplary Leader” by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner.

“This book takes readers step-by-step through leadership development,” Wright says. “It helps you get to know yourself and your leadership potential so you can help develop the other leaders on your team and improve your business.”

The book identifies five elements that the authors assert make a person a better leader: Believing in yourself; aspiring to excel; challenging yourself; engaging support; and practicing deliberately.

Lee has several recommendations for independent retailers who are looking for a strong resource on leadership.

“Emotional Intelligence 2.0” by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves; “The Road to Character” by David Brooks; “The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations” by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner; and “The Work of Leaders: How Vision, Alignment and Execution Will Change the Way You Lead” by Julie Straw, Mark Scullard, Susie Kukkonen and Barry Davis.

“Each of these books comes at the subject of leadership from a different perspective,” Lee says. “I would recommend any of these books to retailers who are looking for a good read.”

Young leaders and those who wish to brush up on their leadership skills should commit to learning key concepts of leadership and personal development that aren’t necessarily learned on the salesfloor.
