The team at Borderland Hardware in Mercedes, Texas, hosted a memorable community party when the business turned 100 in October.
Ken and Debbie Eilers wanted to mark the anniversary of their store’s opening in honor of Ken’s parents, Robert and Loretta Eilers, and applaud the community and employees who have supported the business for decades. Robert has worked in the business for 70 years, owning it for 50 of them.

Ken and Debbie collaborated with the local historic commission and chamber of commerce to plan the ceremony.
Before the big day, they gave their employees gifts and a private dinner to honor their service.
The schedule of events for the party included a proclamation from the mayor, memory sharing from members of the Eilers family and the unveiling of a historic marker. Borderland Hardware also gave away door prizes and provided street tacos, cake and kettle corn for more than 400 people.
“Not too many businesses make it to 100 years,” Ken says. “We wanted to thank our community, my parents and the employees. It takes a lot of work and the support from the community to last this long.”
