White House Announces Delay in Tariffs on Furniture, Cabinets and Vanities

President Donald Trump has announced a proclamation to delay increases on tariffs for upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets and vanities until Jan. 1, 2027, invoking Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

In October, the White House imposed a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets, furniture and vanities, with tariffs on furniture set to increase to 30% and kitchen cabinets and vanity tariffs to double to 50% on Jan. 1, 2026. The 25% tariff will remain in effect.

The White House Fact Sheet on the proclamation stated the following reasoning for the decision:

The U.S. continues to engage in productive negotiations with trade partners to address trade reciprocity and national security concerns with respect to imports of wood products. Given the ongoing productive negotiations regarding the imports of wood products, the President is delaying the tariff increase to allow for further negotiations to occur with other countries.”
