U.S. Retail Sales Up State-by-State in December 2025

The U.S. Census Bureau recently announced the December 2025 Monthly State Retail Sales Report (MSRS), revealing a 2.7% year-over-year increase in total U.S. retail sales excluding nonstore retailers.

Nineteen states and the District of Columbia saw positive and significant year-over-year percentage changes from December 2024 to December 2025. New York experienced the largest increase in this time frame, reporting 9.0% year-over-year growth in December, followed by Hawaii (6.8%), Massachusetts (5.2%) and Connecticut (4.4%). 

States that saw the least amount of growth were Alaska (0.0%), Michigan (0.9%) and Florida (0.9%). 

In the furniture and home furnishings stores sector, total retail sales in December 2025 were down 5.5% year over year, with Colorado showing the largest decline of 13.3%.
