Ten states and the District of Columbia had significant year-over-year increases in total retail sales excluding nonstore retailers in May 2025, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Monthly State Retail Sales report. On average, total retail sales were up 1.8% year over year in May 2025.
States that saw the most change include Nevada (7.0%), Wyoming (4.9%), Idaho (4.5%) and Utah (4.3%). Northeastern states including Maine, Vermont and Connecticut saw little change (under 0.3%) while Maryland, New York, and West Virginia reported year-over-year decreases in total retail sales.
Retail sales for miscellaneous store retailers (not seasonally adjusted) were up 9.9% from May 2024. Twenty states had positive percentage changes, with the highest increase in West Virginia (19.9%) and the lowest reported in Washington (0.6%).
