Consumer spending this Mother’s Day is expected to reach $34.1 billion, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Prosper Insights & Analytics, up from last year’s $33.5 billion.
84% of U.S. adults are expected to celebrate Mother’s Day, with those celebrating expected to spend $259.04 on average on gifts and celebrations. This number is about $5 more than was spent per person in 2024.
“Mother’s Day is an important holiday for many consumers, only surpassed by the winter holidays in terms of average spending,” says Katherine Cullen, NRF vice president of industry and consumer insights. “Even in the face of economic uncertainty, consumers continue to celebrate the special women in their lives with gifts and outings.”
The most popular gift categories are flowers, greeting cards and special outings, like dinner or brunch. Consumers are predicted to spend a total of $6.8 billion on jewelry, $6.3 billion on special outings, $3.5 billion on greeting cards and $3.2 billion on flowers.
“Alongside traditional gifts like flowers or a card, gifts of experience are a way to create a special memory with mom,” says Phil Rist, Prosper executive vice president of strategy. “Whether it’s tickets to a concert or movie, a wine tasting or simply a scenic hike and picnic, there are options to fit any budget.”
36% of shoppers will shop online this year, followed by 32% of consumers visiting department stores, 29% shopping at specialty stores and 25% at local or small businesses.
