The use of sample squares and paint swatches might be becoming old school in home remodeling because of a device called a HoloLens.
Lowe’s and Microsoft are partnering to reinvent the way customers visualize home improvement with augmented reality glasses.
HoloLens is an augmented reality device that will allow consumers to experience a holographic representation of kitchen design options such as cabinets, countertops and appliances, according to Scott Erickson, who leads Microsoft’s HoloLens marketing team.
Wearing the HoloLens headset gives consumers the ability to see a life-like representation of a completely new kitchen that’s to scale with their current kitchen spaces.
If customers wear the HoloLens glasses in a nearly empty showroom kitchen, they can use holograms to change the look and feel of a kitchen space, from the size and shape of an island to detailed finishes. Each headset “displays images over the wearer’s environment,” The Seattle Times reports.
Designs can then be easily shared online, viewable by designers or friends and family members.
Lowe’s is piloting HoloLens in stores in the Seattle area, and will soon begin piloting in-store in Raleigh, North Carolina, near the Lowe’s headquarters.
