In Memoriam: Former Handy Hardware President and CEO Jim Tipton

James D. Tipton, former president and CEO of Handy Hardware, passed away on March 26, 2025 at the age of 100. Jim served as president and CEO of Handy Hardware for over 21 years, retiring in 2002. Jim was an icon in the industry, winning the PRO Lifetime Achievement Award. Jim was also a bombardier on a B-29 in World War II.

“I was fortunate to know Jim for 45 years,” says Richard Paige, retired chairman and CEO of PRO Group, Inc. and Hardlines Distribution Alliance.  “Jim was one of the most respected individuals in our industry and one of the finest people I have ever had the privilege to know.”

“What an amazing person and American hero we lost. Jim was small in stature but a giant when it came to executive presence,” says Steve Synnott, Hardlines Distribution Alliance CEO. “He served our nation courageously in World War II and later served his wife Marilyn as her health and mind declined. He lived such an amazing and full life.”
