Walter J. Hachborn, co-founder of Home Hardware Stores Limited, was inducted as a Companion of the Order of the Business Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Toronto earlier this week.
Established in 1979 by the Junior Achievement of Canada Foundation, the award celebrates the extraordinary lifetime achievements of Canada’s foremost business owners.
Over the course of his almost-80-year career, Hachborn dedicated his life to a vision of helping Canadians grow their businesses while maintaining individual ownership. His leadership and entrepreneurialism have had a tremendous impact on the national hardware industry and the survival of the independent home improvement retailer in Canada.
“Walter’s innovation, hard work and commitment have led him to be recognized by many as a true Canadian business legend,” says Paul Straus, president of Home Hardware Stores Limited. “Walter’s reach extends past just Home Hardware—he has influenced the Canadian hardware industry as a whole.”
The award was accepted by Straus on behalf of Hachborn.
“Our inductees are leading examples of achievement in business and in life,” says Keith Publicover, president and CEO of the Junior Achievement of Canada. “By celebrating these remarkable individuals, we will inspire young Canadians to develop the business skills that they need to become Canada’s next generation of leaders.”
