Doing its part to promote growth in the skilled trades and the independent home improvement channel, Hampton Lumber, which has nine locations in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, has partnered with Girls Build.
Girls Build is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls ages 8 to 14 through hands-on building and construction activities, including workshops, camps and after-school programs. Kristin Rasmussen, director of public affairs and communications for Hampton Lumber, says Hampton Lumber sponsors the Girls Build camps, covering all of the costs associated with putting on the camps in the Oregon communities where it operates sawmills.
Each camp has room for 40 girls, and the camps sell out each year. Rasmussen says the company is thrilled to be able to bring the camps to its communities as a fun and unique way for girls to get exposure to the trades and build skills and confidence.
“Women are disproportionately underrepresented in the skilled trades,” Rasmussen says. “To help address that, we aim to raise awareness that these are great and accessible careers. We’re proud to be able to create opportunities for girls to get exposure to these skills and careers locally and build interest and confidence.”
