Emergency prep is a growing category at the National Hardware Show (NHS). From fires and floods to extreme wind and cold, home improvement retailers play a vital role in providing many of the supplies needed before, during and after emergencies. In preparation for the 2020 storm season, retailers can look to FEMA for a comprehensive list of emergency supplies that can be used as the basis for a disaster prep niche or a full category, including:
- Water: one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation
- Food: at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Battery-powered radio and extra batteries
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit including a three-day supply of prescription medications
- Whistle to signal for help
- Dust mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air
- Moist towelettes for sanitation
- Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
- Can opener
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
- Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
- Sturdy shoes and extra clothing and blankets
- Three-day supply of pet food
Many of these items and more can be sourced at the NHS, scheduled for May 5-7, 2020 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
