Music can be one of the great unifying forces in the world. Whether a huge concert venue or a night out at the theater, musical performances bring fans together for a good time and good vibes.
Not all performances need to be such large productions, however, and Cottin’s Hardware and Rental in Lawrence, Kansas, has exemplified that with its community piano. An upright piano donated by a customer and music teacher sits right next to the front door of the store, which is located on a main thoroughfare through the college town.
“It was a gift that we were happy to accept, and it’s become something of a focal point for the store and our customers. It’s not unusual to hear someone sitting down out there and just playing around with some tunes or songs,” manager Aaron Hicks says.
During warm months, the business often leaves its front doors open to both catch a breeze and the sounds of the different players who frequent the outdoor music machine. Some regular customers like to play a bit when they come to shop, while others frequent the store solely to have some time on the keys.
