The number of open positions in the construction sector increased in April according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). The current level of open jobs is down significantly from three years ago due to declines in construction activity, particularly in housing, according to the NAHB’s Eye on Housing.
The number of open jobs for the overall economy increased from 6.89 million in March to 7.62 million in April, also measurably higher than April 2025.
In the construction sector, jobs increased for the month, jumping slightly from 234,000 in March to 259,000 in April. This total was higher than the total from a year ago.
The construction job openings rate increased to 3% in April, up from the 2.4% rate estimated a year ago.
The layoff rate in construction declined slightly to 1.5% in April. The quits rate was unchanged at 1.7% for the month.
