Amazon recently announced it will be closing Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores to prioritize investing in online grocery delivery and Whole Foods Market expansion.
The company plans to expand its Same-Day Delivery service, adding more cities and towns to the reachable area in 2026. Through this service, customers can shop for produce, dairy, meat, baked goods and frozen foods alongside household essentials, electronics and other Amazon.com products to be delivered within hours. The company also recently introduced Amazon Now, an even faster delivery option that brings essential items and fresh food to customers’ homes in around 30 minutes.
Continuing its Whole Foods Market expansion, Amazon plans to open over 100 new Whole Foods Market stores over the next few years. The company also launched the Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, a smaller store format with grab-and-go meals, coffee and everyday items. This format has been added to five locations so far and five more will open by the end of 2026.
Many of the closed Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores will be converted into Whole Foods Market Stores. Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology was developed with Amazon Go stores, and will continue to be added to third-party and other Amazon physical locations.
