Sponsored: Pattern Play

They say opposites attract—and the same can hold true for the patterns in the rooms in your home. Mixing patterns in your upholstery, rugs and throw pillows can add visual interest and a unique flair to your room—but undertaking it is a feat that scares many. Do it right and you’re left with a distinct space that’s all your own.So how do you mix patterns like a pro?

Choose one bold pattern and accent with more subtle patterns: Think florals with subdued stripes or checks. Designer Kate Smith says small or blended patterns have a tendency to look like solid colors when seen from a distance, while high contrast prints and colors will be noticed immediately. Be sure to mix varying pattern scales to ensure patterns don’t compete with each other.

Mix shades of one or two colors…and don’t be afraid to add some texture: Choose colors that blend well together and against the other existing colors in the room, such as flooring, painted walls or a couch.  Add a textured piece or two (like Kelly Berg did in the bedroom featured above) to give the design some depth.

Take risks: Mixing patterns is not for the faint of heart, but  with these tips and a little confidence, you’ll be reaping the benefits in no time!
