In the last few years, homeowners have been keen to level up their outdoor living spaces. Discover what trends are driving this strong demand based on research from the Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI).
1. Homeowner demand for enhanced outdoor living spaces is holding in 2023.
Product purchase incidence for outdoor living products has doubled since 2015, from 17% to 31% in 2021.
2. Repair and maintenance needs are driving the demand for outdoor living projects.
According to findings in HIRI’s 2022 Retail Selector Study, 67% of outdoor living product purchases were made to complete a maintenance or repair project. Additionally, 78% of homeowners reported making outdoor home improvements to stay in their house as they age, a trend likely to continue as homeowner mobility remains low.
3. Homeowners are looking for variety in product options.
Homeowners who do not purchase outdoor living products when they intended to cite a lack of color, size or style 42% of the time while 39% of homeowners mentioned availability being a factor in not purchasing. These findings suggest that to increase your foot traffic and retail sales for outdoor living products, you need to expand your product options.
