Recently, green practices and making a home more efficient and environmentally friendly have become important to consumers. However, how many of them actually feel that they live in a healthy environment?
Houzz, called the “Wikipedia of exterior and interior design” by CNN, surveyed more than 800 homeowners about their view on the health of their homes. The survey found that 60 percent of homeowners rate their homes as healthy. The older generations are more critical of their homes’ health, whereas 70 percent of millennials believe their homes are healthy.
Most healthy homes are newer, have plenty of natural light and little noise, according to respondents. These homes have fewer indoor and outdoor irritants, yet 20 percent of homeowners are uncertain about many risk factors such as dust mites, mold and contaminants in drinking water.
“A fifth of homeowners plan to do some major painting, flooring and lighting upgrades in the next 12 months; the rates of remodeling are significantly higher in ‘non-healthy’ homes,” according to the study. These upgrades are primarily motivated by respondents’ desires to improve the resale value of their home, to complete larger remodeling projects or to prevent health problems and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
As consumers push toward keeping healthier homes, consider what products you can sell to aid in this process. Promote water filtration systems, carbon monoxide detectors and air purifiers.
