Color Trends for 2016

With the start of 2016, paint manufacturers and trend watchers are announcing what they believe will be the most popular colors for the year. These are colors that designers predict will be showing up in fashion and design, and they may start showing up in your customers’ color choices. This is a good time of the year to review the color palettes in your store to see if you are on top of the latest trends.

Here are some of the color trends to keep an eye out this year.

Rose Quartz and Serenity
For the first time, Pantone chose two colors for its 2016 Color of the Year. “Rose Quartz and Serenity, joined together, demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness, as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

This color combination is a reflection of what is happening in our culture, which is a more unilateral approach to color coinciding with societal movements towards gender equality and fluidity, and the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, according to Pantone.

Simply White
Benjamin Moore announced that Simply White will be its color of the year for 2016, saying it continues to be a popular color that can be seen in styles from traditional to modern. “The color white is transcendent, powerful and polarizing – it is either taken for granted or obsessed over,” says Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore creative director. “White is not just a design trend, it is a design essential. Of the top 10 best-selling Benjamin Moore colors, variants of white occupy five spots.” In deciding the color, the company took into consideration color trends in fashion, textiles, architecture, home furnishings and the arts.

Paradise Found
Paradise Found, an aloe green, is PPG’s 2016 color of the year. “The 2016 Color of the Year provides the sense of strength, energy and comforting familiarity that consumers need to feel confident embracing newness and change. The color is also inspired by the runway, where we have seen a lot of urban militia styles,” says Dee Schlotter, senior color marketing manager for PPG.

PPG features Paradise Found in Odyssey, a collection of four new color palettes for 2016. They say the color will play a prominent role in upcoming home décor trends and styles.
