Self-Checkout Terminal Shipments Due to Increase

London-based research firm RBR predicts the total shipments of self-checkout terminals will continue to increase while retailers continue to pursue new self-service models.

According to RBR’s Global EPOS and Self-Checkout 2013 study, the number of self-checkout terminal shipments is expected to increase from the 27,000 it counted in 2012 to 60,000 by 2018.

The study also suggests that the increase of self-checkout technology will correlate with the number of retailers looking to diversify their approaches to self-service.

Alternatives to traditional self-checkout include mobile self-scanning using store-provided handheld devices paired with fixed terminals for self-service payment.
