In the February issue of Hardware Retailing, the Trends sections illustrated the top four subcategories within the housewares sector, but the industry comprises other categories.
Below is data the International Housewares Association published in its 2014 State of the Industry Report, which can be found here. The subcategories that constitute the largest share of the housewares segment are cook and bakeware, kitchen tools and accessories, kitchen electrics and tabletop. Smaller categories such as household textiles are part of the overall segment as well.
Applied to Retail: Analyze the subcategories above and determine if any of these products would appeal to your target market. You may be in close proximity to a specialty housewares store or mass merchant, so big items like kitchen tools and electrics may not be good additions to your product mix. However, smaller, high-margin items such as pet supplies or tabletop items may be the perfect fit.
