Where Homeowners Are Growing Edible Plants

Retailers in the August issue of Hardware Retailing note that an increasing number of homeowners are planting fruit and vegetable gardens. The retailers’ customers want to know where their food comes from and enjoy the satisfaction of eating the fruit of their own hard work.

Since some homeowners do not have adequate space to plant a garden, many are using containers or small raised beds to grow edible plants. The data below from the 2014 Houzz Spring Landscaping Trends Study, which surveyed 4,500 Houzz users who are in the midst of or are planning a landscape update, shows that raised beds are most popular in suburban areas whereas container gardening is most popular in urban areas.

Applied to Retail: It is important to understand who your customer base is and what type of gardening is possible for them. If your store is located in an urban area, create a container garden beside your store. You can use this display to show customers the different options they have for gardening and to showcase your store’s live goods selection.
