In-store price matching from ads is now a thing of the past for Walmart shoppers.
Historically, customers of the retail giant could present a competitors’ printed ad that displayed a lower price at checkout in order to get a discount. On June 9, Walmart officially discontinued the ad-matching program at 500 store locations, according to an article from Business Insider.
In place of the program, Walmart is launching “long-term price rollbacks” on products and sending customers to its app.
Through the app, users can access a tool called “Savings Catcher” where they can scan receipts, and the app will compare Walmart prices to competitors. The company will then issue an e-gift card for any price difference.
The Saving’s Catcher app will continue to work at all Walmart stores.
In a recent Innovative Retail Technologies article, Walmart spokesperson John Forrest Ales explained that removing the ad-matching was less about promoting the company’s app, and had more to do with price cuts on thousands of store items.
